Glossary

Actinic

The blue-violet part of reef lighting, roughly 420–460nm.

It is the band the photosynthetic algae in coral tissue use most, and the band that makes fluorescent proteins glow. A coral photographed under heavy actinic looks nothing like the same coral under white light, which is why every photograph here states its lighting.
